Hello thee i hope you are having good day :) Your Question: 15-foot piece of string is cut into two pieces so that the longer piece is 3 feet longer than twice the shorter piece. If the shorter piece is x feet long, find the lengths  of both pieces. so firstly you would do  L = 3 + 2x  S = x  X + (3 + 2x) = 15  X + 3 + 2x = 15 3x + 3 = 15  then you would take away that 3x = 15 - 3  this would equal 12 so x = 4 and then add it 3+ 2x = 3+2 (4) = 3 + 8 = 11   Short piece is 4 feet  Long piece is 11 feet.Hopefully that helps you ❤
